Distinctions
Gold Medals
Five centimetres in diameter and made of gilded sterling silver, the Academy's Gold Medal is the highest award, reserved for those individuals and/or entities that have demonstrated, continuously and over the years, outstanding work in favour of the interests and aims of the Academy. Hung from a braided gold-coloured cord, its obverse shows the two quintessential symbols that represent our corporate identity: the Sphinx, the famous figure of Greek mythology that subjected Oedipus to its intricate riddles, characterised by a slender lion with the head of a beautiful lady and sturdy eagle wings; and a Coin, a Spanish Real minted in the 16th century, whose legend links, beneath two columns, the Old and the New Continent. Around the perimeter, the Latin words Ducens, Docens and Inquirens. On the reverse, it is mandatory to engrave the name of its holder.
Academy Distinction
Made of solid bronze, nine centimetres in diameter and circular in shape, the Academy has its most notable Distinction for individuals and institutions that collaborate intensely and selflessly in its own events and activities. A desktop or decorative item of high quality and subtlety, this Distinction seeks to perpetuate the Academy's gratitude for the dedication and effort of its holder. On its obverse, the Spanish Real recovered for our corporate identity, which circulated as official currency in the 16th century under the reign of Charles I, and whose legend shows the bonds of union between Spain and Latin America; at its geometric centre rise two columns, erected over the ocean, bearing the inscription ‘plus’. On the reverse, the full name of the Academy, and the Sphinx that subjected Oedipus to harsh trials before he heroically crossed the desert of Thebes.
